Tiling a shower is not as hard as most people think. Anyone can install ceramic tiles for their shower. Like most weekend chores, tiling a shower is a simple project to do. For those who want to play with designs in their shower rooms or to simply lighten up the area and make it more appealing than usual, tiling is the best thing to do. Tiling a shower does not take too much time but it is important to take things one step at a time.

Materials Needed

• Level
• Ceramic tile mortar
• Trowel
• Pencil
• Tile spacers
• Micro cutter
• Damp cloth
• Grout floater
• Grout sealer
• Silicone caulk

Step 1: Mark the Area

Before installing the ceramic tiles, make sure to mark and create a guide over the area. Starting from the bottommost tile row, a horizontal line should be drawn using a level. The center of the shower wall should be marked with a vertical line. This will create an overview of the project.

Step 2: Apply Mortar to the Wall

Using a trowel, ceramic tile mortar should be applied to the shower wall. The area separating the floor or the tub to the start of the tile show should be spared from mortar application. Later on, caulk will be applied over this area. An important note: mortar should only be applied in areas where a tile will fit in. Mortar usually takes around 10 minutes before it dries. When it hardens, it should be reapplied given that a tile has not been placed yet.

Step 3: Create the First Row of Tiles

Choose the first tile that will start the row for the rest of the wall. This tile will become the bottom or starting row. It should begin on the center line that was previously marked. Install the next piece of ceramic tile. Slowly install the pieces one by one and work the line of lines up and in the direction of the corners. A tile spacer should be used to make sure that the distance of the tiles and their positions are accurate.

Step 4: Trim the Tiles

Once the line of tiles gets to the plumbing fixtures or the corners; cut or trim the edges using a nipper or micro cutter. Before trimming the edges, it’s best to mark the parts to be cut off with a pencil. This will help make sure that the tiles are cut in the right size.

Step 5: Let the Tiles Dry

Leave the tiles for about 24 hours. This will guarantee that thing are already dried and attached properly to their places. Make sure to take away the tile spacers after.

Step 6: Apply Grout

The grout can be applied with the use of a grout float. It is important to apply the grout in one tile at a time. The tile should be cleaned after grout application. A damp cloth can be used to clean the surface of the tile. Let the grout set prior to buffing. A dry soft cloth is used for this procedure.

Step 7: Apply Caulk

For the gaps left earlier, apply the caulk and let everything set for a couple of days.
