Assistant Operations Manager Vacancy
Our site is currently looking to recruit a new Assistant Operations Manager. This role will be in our Operations team for the Good Eating Company at the Business Design Centre in Islington.
The Business Design Centre (BDC) is an integrated conference and exhibition complex, which also houses 120 tenant showrooms and offices year-round. Annually, the BDC hosts over 70 major trade and consumer exhibitions and 250 conferences, no two of which are ever exactly the same. In total these shows attract over 500 thousand visitors a year.
As the 'in-house’ caterer at the BDC, the Good Eating Company has exclusive provision rights for all catering in this varied and challenging contract. The Operations team is responsible for ensuring all events are catered for to the highest possible standard, maintaining an excellent professional relationship with our clients, whilst keeping within defined budgetary restrictions.
The successful applicant will be keen to develop existing skills working on a wide variety of events. We hope to recruit a motivated individual looking for a hands-on floor role in conference and exhibition catering.
PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR THIS ROLE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN OFFICE-BASED EVENTS POSITION.
The ideal candidate will:
-have a professional and mature approach to their work, capable of thinking on their feet and maintaining our company's high performance standards under pressure.
- have strong written and spoken English, as it will be vitally important to be able to communicate quickly and concisely with staff, management and clients. You will also need to come across as approachable, confident and friendly for one-on-one discussions with event organisers.
- be physically fit. The job regularly involves lifting and shifting of crockery, furniture, trollies and catering deliveries.
- be flexible on shift times. This role will require weekend and evening work. We are, on average, operational 26 out of 52 weekends of the year, and regularly have gala evenings or functions that run into late evening. The correct candidate must also be able to start work at 6am occasionally (regardless of your living or transport arrangements) as there can be conferences that require the team to be on site preparing at this time.
- be able to supervise and manage a team of staff.
-Please note a previous supervisory experience in a catering role is ESSENTIAL for this position, due to the regular need to brief, control and manage staff.
- be well presented at all times to appear professional to staff and clients.
Please do not apply for the position unless you meet all of the criteria listed above. Valid references and CV will be required from all applicants, as well as any relevant work permits. Salary package for this role will be dependent on previous experience

IRIS Legal Solutions, the key sponsor of the 2010 Legal IT show (10 & 11 February at the Business Design Centre, Islington), has a hat-trick of products and services it plans to unveil at this year’s show, including a preview of a new web module that will be launched later in the year, demonstrations of a new proactive analytical reporting tool and the launch of a new software guide - essential for anyone evaluating their IT systems.
IRIS will be previewing the new Internet IRIS Fee Earner Desktop which is due to be released later in the year. The IRIS Fee Earner Desktop enables access to PMS on laptops or large screen mobile phones via the Internet. This online module, branded with the firm’s identity, is so incredibly intuitive it requires no training. Ideal for Fee Earners whose time is valuable. There is no need to download or install any software on the desktops or mobile devices making it easy to deploy and maintain. Demonstration bookings can be made here.
IRIS will be showing the new business reporting IRIS Law Analytics module. Whilst good reporting tools will answer the ‘what’ question, they don’t answer ‘why’ or ‘what do we need to do?’ IRIS Law Analytics is a huge step forward, providing you with the ability to strategically reshape your business based on real information. Demonstration bookings can be made here.
Legal IT will also see the launch of the new IRIS Software Solutions guide.
Entitled 'using technology to improve practice and chambers performance', the guide aims to outline the changes in the industry that IRIS see impacting your business for the long term, including the increasing need for remote access and web enablement.
It also contains valuable input from industry experts who explore: the requirements of law firms and barrister chambers for comprehensive IT strategies to support their long-term business plans, integrated workflows and how they can be tailored to gain maximum advantage, the latest trends in hosting/cloud computing and why CRM can be a colossal waste of money unless you are prepared to put the effort in to make it work. The guide also includes the products and services offered by IRIS Legal Solutions and some of their premier partners.
Martin Leuw, IRIS CEO comments, “At IRIS, our commitment to you is that we have been continually investing in our product range and support services throughout the recession to deliver our vision of the firm of the future, with the very best applications available on the market for a firm of your size and aspirations. As a leading technology provider to the profession, the purpose of this guide is for us to help you with your technology choices”.
